The Tutor Your Child Deserves And Why It Should Be Free
By Bruce Wade
Let me ask you a question.
If your child was stuck at 10 pm on a Sunday, one week before their final Mathematics examination, with a question they could not answer and no teacher to call, what would you do?
If you have the financial means, you will probably call their tutor. You would pay R300, maybe R500 for an hour of their time. The problem gets solved. Your child sleeps.
But what if you cannot afford a tutor? What then?
For the overwhelming majority of South African Grade 12 learners, that question has no good answer. They go to bed unsure. They write the exam anxious. They may pass, or they may not, and the difference often comes down not to intelligence, not to work ethic, but to access.
The Invisible Crisis Inside Our Schools
South Africa has a teacher shortage exceeding thirty thousand qualified educators. The subjects most critically affected: Mathematics, Physical Science, Accounting, English are exactly the ones that carry the most weight in the matric pass rate and the university acceptance process. Private tutoring, which costs between R250 and R600 per hour in most urban centres, has become the unofficial second education system for those who can afford it.
This is not a new problem. But we now have a new kind of answer.
Introducing High School Mentor
High School Mentor (www.highschoolmentor.com) is a free-to-use online AI mentoring platform built specifically for final-year high school students. It is a project of M37, developed by ASIC SA Pty Ltd right here in Cape Town.
The platform offers subject-specific AI mentors for both the South African CAPS Matric curriculum and the Cambridge AS & A Level curriculum. Each mentor is built around the actual content of its subject, guided by the curriculum and the textbook, and designed to engage learners in a natural, conversational style, the kind of interaction a patient, expert tutor might offer, available at any hour, with unlimited patience and no additional cost.
Learners can use High School Mentor to work through homework problems, prepare for tests and examinations, and complete mock exam exercises. There are no appointments to book. No subscriptions to pay. No premium tiers. The platform is free for every learner who uses it.
But There Is Something That Makes It Truly Different
AI tutoring is not a new idea. What makes High School Mentor different is what we built into the mentors beyond academic knowledge.
Every mentor on our platform is emotionally mature. They are calibrated to recognise when a learner is overwhelmed, anxious, or struggling, and they respond with empathy, patience, and a clear protocol for connecting distressed learners with appropriate human support. We believe that emotional safety is not an optional extra in education. It is the foundation on which learning happens. Remove it, and even the best academic content in the world will not land.
We have also built strict rules of engagement into every mentor. They do not stray outside their subject matter. They do not engage with harmful or inappropriate content. They are purpose-built for learning, and nothing else.
Why We Need Corporate South Africa to Step In
Building and running this platform costs money. AI processing, server infrastructure, and the technical work of maintaining and updating subject content all carry real operational costs. To keep the platform free, now and into the future, we need sponsors.
We are currently seeking a headline sponsor to help us cover those costs and, critically, to introduce an incentive model for learners. Imagine a system where a learner earns points for completing study sessions, points redeemable for airtime, data, or food vouchers at the sponsor’s outlets. It is a simple idea with profound implications: you are rewarding the behaviour of learning, at the moment it is happening, in the communities that need it most.
For the right corporate partner, this is not just CSI. It is a brand story. It is a long-term relationship with the next generation of South African consumers, built at the most trusted moment of their educational lives, the moment your company helped them pass matric.
An Invitation
If you are a decision-maker at a company with a CSI mandate, a rewards infrastructure, or simply a belief that education is the most powerful investment available to us, I would love to talk.
And if you are a parent, a teacher, or a learner, please share this. Visit www.highschoolmentor.com. Try a session. Tell us what you think.
The tutor your child deserves has always existed. We have just spent too long believing it was reserved for those who could pay.
Not anymore.
