Measuring What Matters

“What gets measured gets managed” is one of business’s most enduring truths. Yet when it comes to AI, most organisations measure everything except what matters: the quality of human-AI relationships.
Traditional AI metrics focus on accuracy, processing speed, and cost savings. These matter, but they’re lagging indicators that tell you what happened, not why it happened or how to improve it. They’re like measuring a car’s speed without checking if anyone’s really enjoying the ride.
Agent Quotient measurement provides a systematic approach to tracking relationship quality across five critical dimensions. Each dimension includes both quantitative metrics and qualitative indicators that together paint a complete picture of human-AI collaboration effectiveness.
For trust and reliability, measure recommendation acceptance rates, verification time, escalation frequency, and error attribution patterns. But also conduct regular pulse surveys capturing emotional confidence in AI systems.
For communication effectiveness, track interpretation time, clarification requests, and output usability ratings. Assess whether teams can explain AI reasoning to stakeholders, a crucial indicator of genuine understanding.
For collaboration quality, measure workflow integration depth, task distribution patterns, and innovation frequency. The most telling indicator? How often do teams discover new AI applications beyond prescribed use cases.
For adaptability, monitor response time to changing requirements, adjustment success rates, and recovery speed from failures. High-AQ teams maintain effectiveness through disruptions.
For mutual enhancement, track skill development rates, performance improvement trends, and AI learning from human feedback. Both humans and AI should become more capable through their partnership.
