Why Positive Thinking Is the Worst Advice You Will Ever Get

By Bruce Wade

Somewhere along the way, positive thinking became the answer to everything. Struggling financially? Think abundant thoughts. Lonely? Visualise connection. Anxious? Just decide to be calm.

This advice is not just unhelpful. Research by Gabriele Oettingen has shown that purely positive fantasy about the future lowers motivation and reduces the likelihood of achievement. The brain, having already enjoyed the fantasy, sees no urgent reason to take the difficult action required to make it real.

What works is more nuanced. It requires honest acknowledgement of where you are, including the difficult parts, combined with a clear vision of where you want to go and a realistic mapping of the obstacles between the two.

It also requires brain state management. You cannot access creative, solution-oriented thinking from High Beta: the stress state most people run on for the majority of their working day. No amount of positive thinking changes the fact that a brain in High Beta has narrowed perception, reduced creativity, and elevated cortisol.

The path to genuine positive results runs through the brain, not around it. You need to understand what state your brain is in. You need tools to move it when the situation requires clear, creative thinking. And you need a model of consciousness that shows you where your thinking is anchored.

Think positive all you like. But think well first.
