My Phone Number
By Bruce Wade
This week, I was looking at creative ways to express my cell number. To me, it was just too boring to just have a list of numbers that people would just not be interested in at all.
Firstly, I expressed the number as a QR code. This allows the code to be scanned and added as a contact to any phone (even Apple). That was efficient but not fun.
I then programmed a set of NFS tabs that I had to do the same thing. You get to rub your phone on my tag and it will transfer my details onto your contact list. A bit more fun, but still boring. Especially since 80% of phones I have tried this with are not NFC activated and people get upset that my technology does not work, but it is their lack of understanding of how to use their phone that is the real issue. We move on.
I then looked at making my phone number into a sentence that people could remember. I tried a few options, then summoned Claude for assistance and we came up with this:
Oh, wait two, sex at five, seven won dirty tree
We are ramping up the fun now.
Then I started to look at maths. The pure joy of mathematics, there had to be something here that I could find. I started with Pi. Yes, my phone number exists in Pi. But it is not within the first 10 million numbers, so that became too complicated to explain and download to my poor computer.
But what if we could develop an algorithm that, when solved would give me the answer to my number? More AI and long-hand stuff and then I got one that is super fun and works:
But I was not finished yet. I put in a call to Maths Central Command. Michael, my son, the mathematic scientist and late-night number boffin. At 11:15 last night I got this formula back from him:
Then, the explanation:
If you take a mug and fill it with tea, the light creates a cardioid curve that is reflected on the surface. If you use a mug with a diameter of 10cm, the area of this curve, measured in micrometres, equals my cell number.
Boom, phone number fun mission complete.
Next time you have a cup of tea, you may want to give me a call.
