Experiential Earthiness

By Bruce Wade

Nestled atop a small hill, deep in the dense forest trees of the Garden Route, just outside the Wilderness, lies Treedom. A place where fantasy meets experience, intersected by grounded hospitality. A place that will linger in your soul for many months.

Marc and Debs, the owners of Treedom, have carved out a small place of paradise for their guests. They have opted not for the typical lux-look of luxury resorts. There is no green lawn, umbrellas, poolside loungers, white-painted walls, and glass partitions. There is bush, sand paths lined with woodchips and gumpoles and raw wood fences. But step closer and your eyes will see small signs, and fairy lights and as you are walked from the car park to your villa or vardo, your heart will start to beat a little quicker.

Treedom offers a treetop villa that stands off the ground offering a bird’s view of their natural habitat. Look beyond the tree tops and you can take in the vast Wilderness Lake valley and oceans beyond. The Vardos, a word for the ancient Gypsy horse-drawn wagons, offer a small house experience in different settings and designs.

However, this is not an advert for Treedom but a reflection of the experiential hospitality experience that they offer. Too often companies setting up their resort or B&B believe that the only way to a good experience is luxury with glass and chrome, manicured gardens and shiny polished cutlery. But Fantasy hospitality can be covered across the full range of the price and experience quadrants and should be designed to meet the needs of those who seek it out. Treedom offers an in-the-bush earthly-authentic toes-in-the-dirt holiday that will leave you feeling like a stranger back in the office.

I believe that if your shoes feel weird after a holiday, you have had a good holiday. Marc and Debs at Treedome do just that for their guests. May we see more brave pioneers in hospitality take on this challenge and carve out new territories for us to explore?
