Business Model Canvas

By Bruce Wade

Developing a business plan is key to setting any business off to a good start. But unfortunately, many business plans are outsourced and then filed away, only to be used when applying for grants or bank loans. No wonder they don’t work.

If you have attended any sort of incubation or business development programme, you will have come across a useful tool: the Business Model Canvas.  This instrument is a strategic management tool that visualises how organisations create, deliver, and capture value. First developed by Alexander Osterwalder, it consists of nine interconnected building blocks: key partnerships, key activities, key resources, value propositions, customer relationships, channels, customer segments, cost structure, and revenue streams. These all fit onto a one-page framework that enables entrepreneurs and established companies to systematically analyse and design their business models.

The tool is used to facilitate brainstorming, coaching discussions, and iteration by providing a shared visual language. The canvas helps identify dependencies between different elements, reveal potential gaps or opportunities, and communicate business concepts clearly to stakeholders, investors, and team members.

If you look at your business as a narrative process, the canvas creates a 9-chapter story dialogue of your future desires and current functionality.

If you have not yet done one of these for your business, then I highly recommend, no, insist that you download the template and begin the process.

It could just be the thing that you need to get you to the future you desire.
